The Outing (Going and Coming) The Saturday Evening Post -- August 30, 1947
Rockwell biographer Christopher Finch comments: "A splendid example of Rockwell's skill as a story teller. Each detail in the lower picture is carefully matched with something in the upper picture so that the result is a kind of humorous symmetry. The individual character studies are wonderful."
Donald Stoltz, President of the Norman Rockwell Museum, points out that everyone has changed except Grandma, whose "expression is unchanged, staring stoically ahead. She has been on these excursions far too often, and experience has taught her to pace herself both going and coming."
