FRANK DiMARTINO
The Numbers Game Series
The Vintage Legends Series
Born in Italy in 1947, Frank DiMartino is the son of a Sicilian auto mechanic and has spent most of his life around automobiles.
"My father drove race cars, and instilled in me a great appreciation of the automobile. The thrill of watching race cars speed through the streets of Italy is a childhood memory I incorporate in each of my paintings."
Frank graduated from the University of Western Kentucky with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, then gained a Master of Fine Arts degree at Pratt Institute in New York in 1972. He taught printmaking at William Paterson University in New Jersey and served as a Master Printer’s assistant at companies in New York.
During the early years of his career, Frank’s interests were eclectic, encompassing diverse subjects and techniques. It was not until much later that his focus reverted to his roots in the the automobile.
With a deep sense of his Italian heritage, DiMartino has concentrated on the depiction of famous Italian auto races. In 1997, his quest for historical accuracy in his paintings led him back to Italy -- to the vintage photo collection of Franco Zagari, a noted photographer and author of several books on automotive history. Hours spent studying the contemporaneous photographic images of historic Italian racing scenes has given Frank’s work an authenticity which can immediately be sensed.
Frank has now developed an artful blend of cars and still life, portraying a portion of an automobile with thesame focus and intensity usually reserved for more traditional still life subjects.
"I do not see myself as an automotive artist, but rather as an artist who incorporates the automobile in his work. I see each of my paintings as a still life with an automotive flair, which I find interesting and playful."
The artist’s work has appeared in numerous national and international publications, including Automotive Art, Sports Car International, Classic and Sports Car, Auto Capital as well as the cover of Sports Car Market. A number of his paintings are in private collections in the USA, Canada, Mexico, Japan and Europe.
Several of his paintings have been included in a group exhibition in Modena, Italy, titled “L’Arte del Mito," -- a tribute to Enzo Ferrari’s 100th birthday, sponsored by Ferrari. Other exhibitions include Meadow Brook Concours d’Elegance Invitational Art Exhibition, Cavillino Classic Galleria d’Arte Ferrari, Hampton Concours, Castle Hill Concours, and Hilton Head Concours d’Elegance.
