The Romance Collection

Gary Whinn displayed a natural talent for art from a very early age. However, the industrial environment of his hometown in England dictated that painting was not a 'proper job.'

Whinn followed a related path that led to a Bachelor of Arts degree in Design - and work for Ford Motor Company and Terence Conran Design. But life eventually brought him full circle back to his first love: fine art.

Blending the traditions of automotive and figurative art, Gary's paintings frequently dramatize romantic scenarios played out against a backdrop of iconic cars. These inspirations for his work were evident in a feature on his paintings published in the inaugural issue of AUTO Aficionado in 2005. He has also appeared in Classic & Sports Car, Octane, and the AFAS Journal of Automotive Fine Art.

Gary is a regular exhibitor at major events in the United Kingdom, such as the Silverstone Historic Festival, Goodwood Revival and the Goodwood Festival of Speed. His paintings have been selected for exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London and for permanent display at the Brooklands Museum.

In the United States he has been invited four consecutive years to Meadow Brook Concours d'Elegance, where he was honored with the Spirit of the Automobilist Award in 2004. As AutoWeek's Kevin Wilson reported at the 2006 event: "I was taken with the paintings of Gary Whinn, a Brit whose best work zeroes in on interactions among people and cars, whether it’s at a track, at a concours or in daily life. Every one of Whinn’s works tells a story, and probably a slightly different story for every viewer. The jury was impressed, too; it awarded Whinn the top prize: the Strother MacMinn Award."

Gary was Meadow Brook's featured artist for 2009. Larry Smith, Chairman of the event said : "Gary Whinn is an artist with a growing reputation on the automotive art scene and his selection is part of a three year plan that aims to build on the already high profile of automotive art at the Meadow Brook Concours d'Elegance. The plan to feature two of the most highly regarded and top earning automotive artists, Ken Eberts in 2007 and Jim Dietz in 2008, puts Gary Whinn in great company!"

Also in 2009, Gary was accepted by the prestigious Automotive Fine Arts Society.

Recognition of Whinn's talent has led to his work being found in collections as far afield as the United States, Australia and countries throughout Europe. His publisher observes: "Gary Whinn's work provides a very clever combination of romance and excitement, which is a hallmark of the most successful figurative painters."
